A number of horse boxes have been arriving into New Zealand in recent years that are built on the Fiat Ducato / Citroen Relay/ Peugeot Boxer chassis.
These small compact horse trucks are convenient to horse owners. No trailer to hook up, no trailer to reverse, and they can be driven with a class 1 license. In some cases they even have a comfortable bed on board for the rider. Even for the horses this type of truck offers a lot of comfort. The horses have more space, and don’t breathe the exhaust gasses from the towing vehicle.
These spacious trucks can offer space for 2 horses and tack gear. However 2 average horses can weigh about 1000-1300kg in total. This kind of payload could exceed the GVM of these vehicles.
By uprating these vehicles, the GVM could be increased to as much as 4000 kg on the “light” series chassis, giving a generous increase in payload.
